The mobile app industry is still fast growing and often ranked as the largest software economies in the world. There are more apps available today than a day before, as developers add thousands of new apps to Apple and Google app stores every day.

According to one estimate, there will be more than 5 million apps available on Apple App Store alone by 2020. There were only 3 million apps at the start of 2017, and only 5 thousand in 2008. There is more demand, people are still interested in buying new apps that in result motivate developers to develop and launch more.

More Downloads

The last quarter of 2017 was also no different. If compared to the 2nd quarter of 2016, the total downloads in Q2 2017 increased by 15.3% but there was a slight drop if compared to 1st quarter of 2017. The total number of downloads in Q2 were 21.8 billion while in Q1, the total number of global downloads were 22.6 billion.

From Where People are Downloading Apps?

There are two main sources to download apps, Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Almost 70% of the total downloads were on Google Play that shows its dominance over other sources like Apple App Store. Google Play also shows 21.7% YoY growth compared to Apple App Store’s 3.2% YoY growth. This also reflects that Google Play is not only currently dominating Apple App Store, but it is also growing 5 times faster than its main rival.

This is also because there are more Android users in the world than iOS, with Android based Samsung phones leading in sales globally.

What are the Most Downloaded Apps?

Even though the most downloaded category in last quarter was games, but the top 5 app downloads all belonged to social media. The top chart also reflects Facebook dominance on app stores as 4 of the top 5 most downloaded apps belonged to Facebook.

The top most downloaded app was Whatsapp with more than 155 million downloads. WhatsApp also experienced a significant growth in its daily active users, as the popular chat app is now used by more than 1 billion daily users.

The second most downloaded app was Facebook, with only a small difference if compared to Whatsapp. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth positions are also occupied by social media. Facebook Messenger was third, Instagram was fourth, Snapchat was fifth, and YouTube was the sixth most downloaded app.

Even though the top 6 most downloaded apps were social media and communication apps, but the overall downloads under this category are declining as users are staying with the leading platforms and not trying out new social media or communication apps.

The most downloaded game was Subway Surfer, that was ranked 7th, followed by Clash Royale ranked 13th, My Talking Tom ranked 15th, Super Mario Run ranked 16th, Honor of Kings ranked 17th, Clash of Clans ranked 19th, and 8 Ball Pool ranked 20th.

Even though the top ten ranks were dominated by social media apps, but overall games downloads are much more than social media and communication apps. Games is still the fastest growing category. This makes game development a lucrative field for developers.

The file sharing app SHAREit by Lenovo is the 8th most downloaded app followed by the ride sharing app, Uber. UC Browser was ranked 10th. The app for video streaming service Netflix was the 14th most downloaded app in last quarter.

Other apps among top 20 most downloaded include Spotify, imo, and Bitmoji.
