WhatsApp Co-Head Brian Acton Leaves, May Form Own Foundation

WhatsApp may face a contender when its co-founder Brian Acton announced that he will leave the company in order to form his very own foundation.

According to a Facebook post, Acton said his own foundation will be focused on nonprofit work, communications, and technology. He added he’s leaving the company to focus on this new foundation, and he has many to share soon.

A report from CNET recaps that social media giant Facebook has purchased the company for a whopping $19-billion. This effectively helped give Acton $6.5-billion, which may be enough for him to fund a new venture.

Facebook has yet to post a comment on Acton’s move.

It can be remembered that Acton is a Stanford University graduate and spent some time in Apple before meeting Koum in their time at Yahoo! They left the company back in 2007 before creating WhatsApp in 2009.

The application gained global acclaim thanks to its many features. The software connects users in order to send messages to one another via the Internet. This is an evolution from the traditional SMS messaging service via phones. The application gained fame fast in countries like Russia, Mexico, India and Brazil.
